The Facts About The Recall
I love serving the residents of Mesa, especially my neighbors in Council District 2! I have served my constituents with all the energy, concern, and care I have to give. Over the past four years, we accomplished many great things! We have lowered police and fire response times, ensured high quality development, and helped create thousands of good paying jobs. Just seven months ago, voters re-elected me in a landslide, 65% to 35%! I am so grateful District 2 voters voiced their approval of my job performance with such an overwhelming win at the polls. Thank you!
Now, the very people who supported my opponent just seven months ago are pushing a costly recall, trying to undo the results of that election. It seems they didn’t like losing so badly! This group is funded 100% by out-of-state, dark money special interests that are pushing their own agenda. They don’t care about Mesa, its people, or our issues. And, they are resorting to distortions, misrepresentations, and outright lies to win this time.
One of the lies they’re telling voters is that this recall will cost Mesa citizens nothing and that there is already a city election planned for November. That is simply not true and they know it. There is no city election planned and the recall will cost Mesa taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars! All for an election seeking to reverse the results of one held just seven months ago.
The filer of the recall petition stated that the reason for the recall was the three votes I took during my first term on City Council. Two of those votes were approved unanimously by the City Council, including the YES vote of Mayor Mark Freeman. The third vote was to use federal recovery funds to provide emergency sheltering for female adult homeless Mesa residents who are victims of domestic violence, their children, and Veterans. I am proud to work toward a solution that will help those who are the most vulnerable in our community.
I won two decisive elections running on a commitment to listen to my neighbors and to pursue common sense solutions for our great city, implemented with compassion and kindness. I recognize that as a decision maker, I cannot please all people all the time. I have tried my best to carefully study every issue that comes before the City Council, consider a variety of input and opinions, and vote based on what I believed was right for our citizens and our community.
